Nasrin Ghaussi memorial (by her family)

The Nasrin Ghaussi Respiratory Therapy Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Nasrin Ghaussi, beloved mother, sister, and aunt. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1956, she studied medicine at Kabul University, but her studies were interrupted by war. Resuming her studies at the University of Khartoum Medical School, she graduated with her MD in 1983, then immigrated to the United States. As with any foreign medical graduate, she faced a long road to practice as a doctor here. Though she received ECFMG certification, like many mothers she had to balance her career goals with supporting her family and raising her children. Ultimately, she made the difficult decision not to continue with a residency, but she did not give up on her calling to help people.

OCC’s Respiratory Therapy program helped her earn the credential that she needed to find a job that could provide income along with time for her family. She was a respiratory therapist at Beaumont Royal Oak for over two decades. Over the years she treated countless patients and she was known for her compassion, dedication, and kindness. Her family and friends hope that she can continue to change lives through this scholarship.
