Dennis Fiems

Susan and Dennis Fiems worked at Oakland Community College for a combined total of 52 years. Together, they served the College community in a variety of ways. Their scholarship reflects their love of books and their desire to help others.

Susan worked in the Highland Lakes Library as a library technician. Her favorite part of the job was working with staff and students, and she was dedicated to helping them in ways well beyond normal library services. She was chosen as the Highland Lakes (HL) campus’ “Outstanding Employee” in 2006, and on retirement was given Emeritus status in June, 2008. At home, she was an accomplished quilter and an avid reader. Sadly, Susan Alice Fiems died on July 13, 2008 after a long and courageous battle against cancer.

Dennis Fiems was a charter member of the Oakland Community College faculty. Three times he was chosen as “Outstanding Faculty” before he retired, and on his retirement in June, 2008 was granted Emeritus status. Dennis is committed to his family, his students and to the College.

Dennis, Susan’s loving and devoted husband of forty years, established the Susan and Dennis Fiems Endowed Scholarship for Textbooks in August, 2008 to commemorate and honor their passion and love of books and to demonstrate their shared desire to help others. He wants Susan to be remembered for “infusing life, light and joy into the lives of all with whom she came in contact. She was an enduring, generous spirit illuminating any corner shadowed by difficulty.”

Susan and Dennis served the College community and participated in a variety of committees and projects through the years. They shared a strong belief in the obligation to serve the community and to assist others in achieving goals.
