Jonathan "Scott" Bryant Memorial (by his mother)

Shirley Bryant has been on the Oakland Community College Board of Trustees since 2008 and has served as chair and vice-chair. Ms. Bryant also served as a Director on the OCC Foundation Board from 2005 to 2016.

She is a retired Executive Director of Community Relations for Birmingham Public Schools. In 2007, Ms. Bryant was inducted into the Eastern Michigan University College of Education Hall of Fame, because of her long-standing commitment to education in the community.

In the spirit of that commitment to education and to honor the memory of her son Jonathan “Scott” Bryant, Ms. Bryant has established an endowed memorial scholarship. Scott was a smart, athletic, and popular young man with a big personality and good friends. Everything was going great for Scott until he was in college at 20 years old and the wheels started falling off his life. He began to have delusions and hallucinations and became unable to keep his life together. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He died of suicide caused by mental illness on his 23rd birthday.
